The USU Center of Excellence in Science and Technology for Mangrove successfully held the 6th ICONART, featuring eight presenters from Indonesia and abroad who discussed topics related to natural resources and technology. The conference strengthened academic, industry, and community collaboration to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Center of Excellence in Science and Technology for Mangrove, also known as PUI Mangrove USU, successfully held the 6th International Conference on Natural Resources and Technology (ICONART). The event, organized in collaboration with the USU Faculty of Forestry, the Faculty of Forestry of Universitas Hasanuddin, the Nationwide University Network in Indonesia (NUNI), and the Malaysia Green Technology Society, took place on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at the Grandhika Hotel located on Jalan Dr. Mansyur, Padang Bulan, Medan.
This year’s ICONART conference featured eight speakers from both domestic and international backgrounds, presenting in a hybrid format with both online and in-person sessions. The keynote speakers who presented in person included A. Aldrie Amir, Ph.D. (Malaysia), Prof. Dr. Etti Sartina Siregar, S.Si., M.Si. (Indonesia), Dr. M. Chandra Sagaran (Malaysia), Prof. Putu Doddy Sutrisna (Indonesia), Syahidah, Ph.D. (Indonesia), and Syahril Nizam Abdul Malek (Malaysia). Meanwhile, Reiko Omoto, Ph.D. (Japan), and Prof. Martin Zimmer (Germany) delivered their presentations online, watched by all participants. The topics ranged from moss to palm morphology, and the speakers delivered their presentations clearly and effectively. The participants showed great enthusiasm for the material presented.
The conference, themed "Natural Resources and Technology for Achieving Sustainable Development Goals through Collaboration between Academia, Industry, and Community," began with opening remarks from several key figures, including Prof. Mohammad Basyuni, S.Hut., M.Si., Ph.D., the head of PUI Mangrove USU, Dr. Rudi Hartono, S.Hut., M.Si., the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry USU, and Prof. Dr. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, S.Si., M.Si., Apt., Vice Rector for Research and Cooperation. In her remarks, Prof. Poppy expressed her gratitude to all parties involved and conveyed her pride in the successful organization of the 6th ICONART. She also emphasized that this conference serves as a valuable platform for strengthening relationships and sharing beneficial information. Additionally, she noted the importance of this conference as an intellectual interaction and a wide-reaching collaborative networking medium.
Echoing Prof. Poppy's sentiments, Prof. Basyuni thanked the participants and all those involved for their excellent cooperation, which contributed to the successful implementation of ICONART 2024. He also highlighted that the conference attracted participants from countries such as Germany, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, etc. With 171 participants involved, the broad participation aligns with USU's internationalization program. Prof. Basyuni expressed his hope that ICONART will be held annually and continue to improve each year.
Following the opening remarks, the event continued with a series of entertainment, including traditional dances and a solo vocal performance, followed by the keynote speakers' presentations. The event concluded with a group photo session to commemorate this historic moment.
