HUMAS FAHUTAN - The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held a Workshop on the Use of the USU Learning Management System (LMS) (KELAS USU) on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at USU Campus II Kwala Bekala. The workshop aimed to increase the use of digital technology in supporting the learning process while strengthening lecturers’ competencies in optimizing the learning platform developed by Universitas Sumatera Utara.

The workshop was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Forestry USU, Prof. Dr. Arida Susilowati, S.Hut., M.Si., who emphasized the importance of adapting to digital transformation in higher education. According to her, the utilization of learning technologies is a strategic step toward improving the quality of teaching and learning while fostering an innovative educational ecosystem.

The event continued with remarks from the Director of Learning Digitalization USU, Dr. Ir. Tigor Hamonangan Nasution, S.T., M.T., IPM., who emphasized the Directorate of Learning Digitalization’s commitment to supporting the implementation of modern learning at USU through the development of various digital platforms.

The presentation and hands-on LMS practice session was led by Anggi Maisarah, S.H., M.H., Manager at the Directorate of Learning Digitalization USU. She explained that KELAS USU is a Learning Management System (LMS) developed to support modern learning at USU. In addition to serving as a learning platform, the system provides various features that can support research activities, community service, and the development of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

Participants also received an explanation of the process of synchronizing their SATU USU accounts with KELAS USU through the Single Sign-On (SSO) system, which serves as the initial step for accessing the university’s digital services. Anggi also demonstrated the LMS’s key features, including class management, learning material distribution, assignment management, and various tools designed to improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning.

As part of the workshop, participants took part in a hands-on session using the KELAS USU application with assistance from the Directorate of Learning Digitalization team. Through this session, lecturers had the opportunity to explore the platform’s features directly, enabling them to implement the LMS more effectively in their respective courses.

Following the workshop, the guests were treated to a lunch featuring traditional Karo cuisine. They also had the opportunity to visit one of the Faculty of Forestry’s facilities, the greenhouse, where they explored a diverse collection of plants, including orchids, pitcher plants, and the renowned corpse flower.

Through this workshop, the Faculty of Forestry USU demonstrated its commitment to supporting digital transformation in higher education and promoting a learning process that is more effective, adaptive, and responsive to technological developments.

The activity also contributed to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through improving technology-based learning and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) through the utilization of digital innovation in higher education.
