The European Union enhances collaboration with North Sumatra through a sustainable tourism seminar at Universitas Sumatera Utara. This initiative strengthens ties in education, culture, and environmental conservation.

Medan-USU: “The European Union is interested in enhancing collaboration with North Sumatra Province and strengthening ties with Medan as the provincial capital and regional hub. We see this as an important opportunity to showcase the EU’s activities in Indonesia and build relationships with local governments, business communities, civil society, academic circles, and students,” said EU Ambassador Mr. Vincent Guérend during his speech at the Seminar on Sustainable Tourism, held on Thursday (20/10/2016) at the Auditorium of Universitas Sumatera Utara.

Mr. Vincent Guérend further stated that the EU delegation’s visit to Universitas Sumatera Utara was part of a series of visits to several locations in North Sumatra.

“On the first day of the visit (19/10), we held discussions with civil society on human rights, interfaith tolerance, environmental issues, and education. I also opened the European Union Scholarship Fair at Aryaduta Hotel, aimed at providing information about scholarships and studying in Europe for students. The event featured presentations from the British Embassy/British Council, the Irish Embassy, the Swedish Embassy, the Polish Embassy, Campus France/IFI, DAAD Germany, Nuffic Neso Netherlands, Uni-Italia, and the European Union. The fair also showcased traditional weaving crafts by women from North Sumatra who participated in an EU-funded project involving 4,000 female weavers from Indonesia and the Philippines to support regional traditional economic activities,” explained Mr. Vincent Guérend.

On October 20, the EU delegation visited cultural sites in Medan and conducted a seminar on sustainable tourism at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) to share the EU’s experiences in tackling environmental challenges and promoting high-quality, innovative tourism initiatives.

On October 21, the EU delegation planned to visit the Elephant Conservation Unit in Tangkahan, located in Gunung Leuser National Park. The EU has provided substantial support to the unique Leuser Ecosystem and remains committed to supporting Indonesia’s climate change mitigation efforts and biodiversity in ASEAN. As a symbol of its commitment to environmental conservation and combating climate change, the EU adopted a baby elephant named “Eropa” from Tangkahan as its mascot in Indonesia in 2015. This visit provided an opportunity to see “Eropa,” now one year old, and discuss ecotourism and conservation opportunities with the local community.

In addition to Mr. Vincent Guérend, the EU delegation visiting USU included ambassadors from several European countries, such as Austrian Ambassador Mrs. Helene Steinhausl, Greek Ambassador Mr. Georgios Dogoritis, Hungarian Ambassador Mrs. Judit Nemeth-Pach, Irish Ambassador Mr. Kyle O’Sullivan, and Italian Ambassador Mr. Vittorio Sandalli.

During the seminar attended by approximately 800 USU students, the ambassadors delivered presentations on tourism in their respective countries. The event was also attended by the Rector of USU, Prof. Dr. Runtung, S.H., M.Hum., USU Vice Rector II, Dr. dr. Muhammad Fidel Ganis Siregar, M.Ked(OG), SpOG(K), and the Head of USU’s International Affairs Office, Dr. Esther Sorta Nababan, M.Sc.

USU Rector, Prof. Runtung, expressed his pride in the EU delegation’s visit to Universitas Sumatera Utara. “We are very proud that the EU delegation in Indonesia is currently at USU. I hope all participants gain productive and beneficial ideas from this seminar,” said USU Rector, Prof. Runtung, in his remarks at the seminar.
