The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), held the Academic and Student Talk (BADAK) event in the Undergraduate Thesis Supervisor Selection Series as a platform for students to understand the process and strategies of selecting thesis supervisors aligned with their research interests.
FORESTRY PR — The Faculty of Forestry, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), once again held the Academic and Student Talk (BADAK) activity with the theme “Undergraduate Thesis Supervisor Selection Series.” The event took place in the Akasia–Balsa Room and was attended by students from the 2023 cohort as well as those who have not yet chosen a thesis supervisor.
The activity featured several speakers from the Faculty of Forestry, USU, including Dr. Anita Zaitunah, S.Hut., M.Sc. (Head of the Forest Management Laboratory), Dr. Deni Elfiati, S.P., M.P. (Head of the Forest Cultivation Laboratory), Dr. Ir. Luthfi Hakim, S.Hut., M.Si., IPU., ASEAN Eng. (Head of the Forest Products Technology Laboratory), and Dr. Ridahati Rambey, S.Hut., M.Si. (Head of the Forest Resource Conservation Laboratory). Also present was Moehar Maraghiy Harahap, S.Hut., M.Sc., a lecturer from the Forest Resource Conservation field.
Through this activity, the speakers shared practical guidelines on the process of selecting thesis supervisors in line with scientific fields such as Forest Management, Forest Product Technology, Forest Cultivation, and Forest Resource Conservation.
In addition to discussing supervisor quotas, the event also explored tips and tricks for choosing supervisors and the administrative requirements students must prepare. Dr. Ir. Tito Sucipto, S.Hut., M.Si., IPU., ASEAN Eng. (Head of the Undergraduate Forestry Study Program, USU), also provided explanations regarding the technical process of supervisor selection, administrative regulations, and the rules to follow during the thesis supervision period.
In the closing session, Dr. Ridahati Rambey delivered an inspiring message to students to remain focused and disciplined.
“Students must be able to graduate on time, stay focused on themselves, and not follow their friends in unproductive things. Lecturers will be proud when you finish quickly — that success brings joy to us as well,” she said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ir. Luthfi Hakim added another memorable remark:
“Your thesis is indeed your monumental work, but remember, it will not change the world. Create a thesis that fits your conscience — simple, inexpensive, quick to finish, and most importantly, one that you enjoy working on.”
Through this BADAK activity, it is hoped that students will be better prepared and wiser in determining their research direction and choosing their supervisors, ensuring that the thesis writing process runs smoothly, effectively, and meaningfully.
